The Obesity Society – (TOS) a non-profit organization dedicated to better understanding, preventing and treating obesity – seeks a Controller to work at its convenient location next to the metro in Silver Spring Maryland. The Controller position, CPA preferred, reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for managing the integrity of accounting and financial information by recording, reconciling, and scheduling transactions.
As a small non-profit, the Obesity Society can offer a diversity of responsibilities within a team environment. Except in times of audit preparation and the national conference, the positon is a quality of life opportunity. Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to support both staff and governance activities.
Full cycle general ledger management, including the reconciliation of specified balance sheet accounts and trial balance. Preparation and input of monthly journal entries. Production of monthly financial statement in concert with the COO, who functions as the society’s CFO.
Assist COO in the preparation of audits schedules, documentation and form 990.
Implement related accounting functions, including but not limited to, payroll, cash disbursements, cash receipts, journal entries, and financial reports
Reconcile merchant accounts to match AMS database, accounting and banking systems
Track and manage corporate, grant, sponsorship and financial activities for services provided by the Society to third parties
Prepare accurate schedules and support the annual budget process
Support both the internal and external financial transactions related to the Society’s national conference to include registration, exhibits and sponsors
Process yearly personal property tax and unclaimed property returns
Responsible for semi-monthly payroll processing.
Process 1099’s at year end and confirm all federal and state filing are accurate and timely
Maintains filing system for all financial records.
Reports and analysis as required to support financial results or special reporting requests
For consideration candidates must have:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, active CPA certification preferred
Five years of accounting experience as a senior staff accountant with exposure to non-profit accounting
Experience with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office and AMS systems
Experience with multi-tasking in a small office environment
