The Research Consultant is responsible for all SNA research that collects information and feedback from SNA members to help identify school nutrition trends and opportunities.
Identifies and analyzes metrics to evaluate and improve SNA programs, conferences and member satisfaction. Designs, conducts, analyzes, interprets and tracks research surveys to identify school nutrition market trends. Applies published data from government sources to the SNA database to analyze membership information.
Research Planning and Priorities:
Provides input into planning SNA research goals and activities for professional development programming, membership and legislative issues.
Evaluates resources and staff time to make recommendations on which priority research should be contracted and which can be done in-house.
Research, Analysis and Reports:
Designs, conducts and manages system that collects information and feedback from SNA members to help identify school nutrition trends, members satisfaction and future opportunities.
Identifies, develops and analyzes metrics to evaluate and improve SNA programs, conferences and member satisfaction.
Develops, updates and conducts or manages SNA data surveys including Back to School Trends Report, SNA annual position paper research, Operations Survey, and Trends Surveys as scheduled.
Serves as a resource for staff in the development of data for presentations to support presentation objectives and also the Little Big Fact Book.
Provides research analysis expertise to staff in evaluating trends in nutrition and food services that will impact child nutrition programs and association initiatives.
Conducts secondary research on priority research topics as requested and occasionally designs and conducts primary research.
Monitors the Web and other sources to check regularly for research data and reports applicable to the association’s missions and programs and benchmarks information.
Member Demographics & Reach Analysis:
Pulls data from SNA’s database in a variety of ways to analyze trends.
Applies published data from USDA and NCES to the SNA database to analyze membership information including: number of students reached, reach based on attendees at various conferences, district size and other criteria as needed
On a monthly basis, monitors and publishes the USDA Participation tracker to analyze variances in school breakfast and lunch participation by state and nationally.
Presents research results to key groups and at conferences
Disseminates research to key staff at SNA via brown bag lunches and/or summary reports
Advises committee and facilitates completion of plan of action assignments.
Provides counsel and recommendations for future committee activities.
Writes, edits and distributes official meeting minutes
Master’s degree in Marketing Research, Nutrition, Public Policy or Statistics or BA degree in one of these fields with three years of related research experience. Education and/or experience in public health nutrition programs preferred.
Experience and Knowledge:
Minimum four years’ experience as a researcher working in an Association, legislative or other business environment conducting research, analyzing trends and other data and writing research reports for varied audiences.
Demonstrated experience conducting secondary research, managing and collecting data using survey tools, and designing and conducting primary research.
Demonstrated experience reviewing research, analyzing and interpreting results, drawing conclusions and using it to identify trends.
Demonstrated experience using research to improve program development and management.
Demonstrated experience presenting at conferences and to small groups.
Demonstrated experience working on an interdisciplinary team.
Working knowledge of federal child nutrition programs, federal government agencies and national child nutrition advocacy organizations is preferable.
Affiliation and experience with allied associations preferred.
Excellent writing and presentation skills required. Ability to write and present for various audiences and to communicate technical material in an understandable style for non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated writing skills that indicate an ability to effectively use relevant data in written materials to support conclusions.
Advanced skills in using Excel and databases for research and data analysis.
Demonstrated skills in data analysis and interpretation, including ability to apply information to the mission and program objectives and provide useful input to program development and management.
Demonstrated skills in work experience using the Web and other sources to gather data, check data, identify links to other sources and study primary research.
Strong self-starter with a track record of initiative and ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Demonstrated skills and experience in both focusing on the details required for research and the bigger picture issues of research application to program development and management.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide variety of staff and work at all levels in an organization as a part of a team.
