The Vice President, Federal Affairs is responsible for providing support for member priorities related to federal tax, insurance, securities and financial services legislation.
Responsibilities will include assisting in the execution of strategic public policy, advocacy, communications and outreach campaigns to promote, advocate and defend policies and programs on behalf of the industry and member companies on federal issues to Congress and the executive departments; and building, maintaining relationships with and representing IRI with federal policy makers to promote, advance and defend IRI’s policy agenda, enhance IRI’s image and establish IRI as a trusted public policy resource.

Serve as one of the registered federal lobbyists for IRI on Capitol Hill regarding retirement income and security, insurance, securities, financial services, tax, labor and employment policy issues.
Collaborate with Government Affairs team members to execute government affairs strategic federal legislative goals and objectives.
Maintain broad awareness of the political environment, trends, positioning and opportunities for implementing IRI’s interests.
Work with member representatives and external stakeholders to drive results through the federal legislative and political process.
Develop and maintain high-level, bipartisan political relationships with Members of Congress and their staffs.
Collaborate and coordinate with allied trade associations to promote common goals.
Review and update quarterly lobbying reports working with outside counsel to ensure adherence to federal lobbying laws.
Draft summaries of legislation, letters; testimony; talking points; questions for hearings; and other documents to support IRI’s policy agenda.
Explain complex policy, research, and recommendations to federal policy makers and staff.
Represent IRI and speak on behalf of IRI at conferences, webinars, briefings, and events which will promote and advance the goals and objectives set forth in IRI’s retirement security policy agenda.
Assist the Vice President, Government Affairs in overseeing the management and execution of IRI’s grassroots program to ensure coordination with lobbying efforts and events.
Collaborate and communicate with cross-departmental IRI team members working on broad initiatives and work closely with members of the Government Affairs Team.
Assist the Vice President, Government Affairs in staffing and managing the IRI Government Affairs Advisory Council and the IRI PAC Oversight Committee.
Assist the Vice President, Government Affairs in managing the IRI Political Action Committee (IRI PAC) and represent the IRIPAC at fundraising events.
Assist as needed in planning of IRI conferences, webinars, briefings, and events including the coordination of the participation of policymakers in conferences, webinars, briefings, and events.
Prepare content for and edit various IRI publications, including weekly Government Affairs Update and weekly Board Update.
Perform and carry-out other projects and functions as assigned.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and 5-10 years’ experience in insurance and/or securities compliance functions for mid-size to large insurance companies and/or broker-dealer firms.
At least 5-10 years’ work experience in lobbying/public relations firm, policy staff/political campaigns, Capitol Hill legislative staff, and/or government affairs office for a trade association or, relevant experience in government relations, public policy and advocacy, preferably related to retirement security, insurance, securities, financial services, tax, labor and employment policy.
