This full-time position is responsible for ensuring the quality of the content, design and the timely production and distribution of a not-for-profit association magazine. Responsibilities include all aspects of planning, writing, editing, and designing a 10-issue/year magazine.
Actively cultivate high quality editorial content for magazine. Research article topics and submissions and obtain permissions and copyright verbiage when needed.
Research topics and write short and feature-length articles.
Gather materials to write or edit columns.
Coordinate efforts with authors and contributors.
Proofread, edit and rewrite contributed articles to meet publication standards.
Layout, design and produce magazine.
Proof pages prior to sending to publisher and check printer’s proof.
Develop and maintain style sheets and editing guide and distribute to contributing authors and staff.
Help establish editorial calendar, research future editorial content, and maintain strong professional relationships with authors, potential authors, and other possible contributors to the magazine.
Develop database of authors to provide magazine editorial and work on a long-term strategy for creating a sustainable pool of regular authors for the magazine.
Review other industry publications.
Take photos at annual convention; identify, sort, create and print contact sheets for association’s four major yearly meetings/conferences.
Send PDFs of articles as requested.
Network at industry events for story ideas.
Prepare and file Post Office statement.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: B.A. in English, Journalism, Communications or related discipline.
EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of experience at a magazine or newspaper.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with files sharing services and collaboration apps. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Mastery of AP Style Manual. Association experience a plus.
