The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is seeking a Content Creation Coordinator to join the Content Creation team at WEF. This position would be responsible for writing and editing for a wide variety of WEF publications with a primary focus on magazines and newsletters.
Serves as in-house copywriter for several print and online publications including Water Environment & Technology, Water Environment Federation Highlights, and The Stormwater Report, etc.
Produces a variety of content types including news briefs, news analysis articles, profiles, case studies, photo essays, etc.
Works closely with publication editors to hone angle and scope of assignments.
Researches assignments via press releases, background research, and firsthand interviews.
Substantively edits staff-written articles AND edits technical papers and original manuscripts to meet the desired format as well as the needs/expectations of the intended audience.
Confers with publication editors to understand the desired angle.
Implements WEF Style.
Works with external authors (subject matter experts) to get review and approval of edited draft.
Collects, reviews, and organizes associated graphics and photos.
Participates in publication planning and brainstorming meetings.
Supports production processes of Content Creation department.
Posts and reviews articles and information on WEF websites.
Assists in proofreading of print publications.
Other duties as assigned, such as line-editing factsheets, annual reports, marketing materials, etc.
Qualifications and Desired Attributes:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field, preferably with an educational background in or commensurate experience with science or engineering concepts.
1 to 4 years’ experience in newspaper, magazine, or trade journal publishing; experience writing for print, digital, and social media channels; experience covering science, environmental, and/or nonprofit strongly desired; multimedia experience preferred.
An understanding of print and digital publishing; knowledge of AP Stylebook and rules of grammar, punctuation, and proofreading; social media savvy; knowledge of environmental, general scientific issue, and/or nonprofit organization issues and trends preferred.
Comfortable working with Microsoft Office programs.
Excellent writing skills and ability to create engaging content; strong research and interviewing skills.
Excellent time-management skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong attention to detail; comfortable working with editors and internal and external experts; good problem-solving skills, as well as good listening and communication skills.
This person will work primarily in an office environment using standard office equipment.
