Under the general direction of the Government Affairs Director of the Florida Apartment Association (FAA), the Local Government Affairs Manager assists in the development, coordination and implementation of the local government relations effort for local affiliates on behalf of FAA. Specifically, the Local Government Affairs Manager will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, and facilitating the response for local ordinances or policies that could impact the apartment industry.
Serve as the association’s liaison with FAA and NAA government affairs departments.
Research, track, and analyze public policy developments at the local level that will impact the apartment industry and advise the association of relevant developments.
Prepare association members for meetings with elected officials by providing background research and talking points.
As deemed necessary, help the local affiliate advocate on behalf of the apartment association at public meetings (City Council, County Commission, etc.).
Facilitate relationship development with public policy makers at the local level to ensure the association has a seat at the table and is connected to the key decision makers in the community.
Manage logistics and the scheduling of meetings for lobby days in Tallahassee and DC.
Author articles related to local government advocacy in the association’s magazine, blog, or other online media.
Provide annual Advocacy Training for association staff and members.
Provide a framework for the association to establish a grassroots government affairs/legislative engagement committee (Legislative Committee/Council).
Serve as the association’s media/press contact and facilitate print media quotes, on-camera interviews, and press releases related to local policy issues.
Provide the association with social media content as needed regarding advocacy efforts.
A background in government and politics.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, familiarity with various communications tools including computers, the internet and various software applications.
Strong listening, comprehension, expression and consensus building skills.
Travel on a semi-frequent basis within the state and to national conferences as required.
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college/university.
Trade association experience a plus.
A working knowledge of property management a plus.
Knowledge of housing related policy issues.
Interpersonal communications, verbally and in writing with a diverse range of people.
The ability to multitask successfully.
Effectively using time and resources to accomplish program operations.
Maintaining effective business relations with those encountered in the in the course of work.
Analyzing and independently solving a variety of situations and problems.
Strong organizational skills, comfort in working in fast-paced environment.
