GovHR USA is pleased to announce the recruitment and selection process for an Executive Director for the Maine Municipal Association located in Augusta, ME. Founded in 1936, MMA is one of 49 state municipal leagues that, together with the National League of Cities, are recognized at all governmental levels for providing valuable services and advocating for collective municipal interests. The MMA has a core belief that local government is a fundamental component of a democratic system of government. MMA is dedicated to assisting local governments, and the people who serve in local government, in meeting the needs of their citizens and serving as responsible partners in the intergovernmental system. MMA’s services include Advocacy, Education and Information, Professional Legal and Personnel Services and Group Insurance Self-Funded Programs.
The Executive Director is appointed by and reports to the organization’s governing board, the Executive Committee, which is comprised of twelve members elected by the membership to serve staggered three-year terms. The Maine Municipal Association (MMA) is a non-profit, non-partisan, voluntary membership organization offering an array of professional services to municipalities and other local governmental entities in Maine.
The successful candidate’s education and experience will include the following:
An undergraduate degree is required with preference for preparation in Public Administration, Public Policy and Management, Political Science, Business Administration or Association Management. Advanced preparation to the Master's level in any of the above disciplines, is also desirable.
A minimum of seven to ten years' senior level management experience where leadership qualities and skills have been demonstrated. This experience should also include responsibility for managing a diverse professional and support staff. A working knowledge of intergovernmental relations, the legislative process, and group self-funded benefit programs and related activities is desirable.
Executive level experience in a municipal association or a large public sector organization, preferably at the municipal level, is highly desirable.
Ability to develop strong working relationships and interact with elected officials, senior staff, boards or commissions, employee representatives in a positive and professional manner is required. A demonstrated passion to engage and work with others is highly desirable.
