Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Position Summary 

The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) oversees and manages SMFM’s growing portfolio of work related to DEI, including the Emerging Leaders Program, diversity and inclusion among SMFM committees and volunteers, and all activities of the SMFM Committee on Diversity and Inclusion on the Workforce. 

Responsibilities 

Emerging Leaders Program 

• Develop, launch, and oversee all aspects the grant funded SMFM Emerging Leaders Program.
• Analyze member data to establish baseline demographic information related to gender, race/ethnicity, and geographic location among the SMFM membership at-large and the leadership (Board of Directors and Committees). 
• Develop the framework and curriculum for a new Emerging Leaders Program that is informed by the membership data and includes activities such as media training, hands-on advocacy experience, and mentoring. Interface with consultants, members, and other Emerging Leaders Program faculty.
• Create and manage an application and scoring process by which applicants will be evaluated.
• Work directly with the Senior Director of Meetings to secure event space and logistics for in-person meetings.
• Oversee all aspects of the online Mentor Match program.
• Interface directly with the funder(s).
• Prepare and manage program budget and grant compliance reports.
• Identify and develop proposals for additional funders.  

Committee on Diversity and Inclusion on the Workforce 

• Manage all aspect’s of SMFM’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion in the Workforce, including but not limited to: 

• Solicit and score applications for the Annual Mentoring Award 
• Oversee the logistics and program for the annual DEI Reception  
• Recruit members to be featured in the Member Spotlight Series 
• Review and write Position Statements on health equity and workplace diversity issues. 

• Facilitate the content review process of documents created by the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee, the Publications Committee, and other SMFM committees. 
• Develop a roadmap to guide SMFM committees and staff regarding inclusive gender language. 
• Interface with the SMFM Program Committee for course content related to DEI topics. 
• Develop courses and identify faculty on DEI topics, as appropriate. 

Governance  

• Ensures that SMFM committees are transparent and inclusive in their application process, selection of new members, and terms of service. 

• Regularly reviews the committee application policy through the lens of DEI and initiates any needed updates.  
• Oversee all aspects of the annual call for committee applications. 
• In partnership with the CEO, serves as the staff lead in the development of internal policies and procedures that would aim to make committees, ad hoc task forces, and the Board of Directors more diverse. 
• Serves as the staff point of contact for various SMFM liaisons with an eye towards inclusion among the membership. 

• Serves as DEI ‘best practice’ resource for internal hires and new job positions. 

Development & Industry Relations 

• Pursue strategic funding opportunities to support the Emerging Leadership Program and future DEI projects with oversight by the CEO and SMFM leadership. 

Other 

• Represents SMFM at meetings and conferences as needed. 
• Manages the SMFM related work for the Collective Action in Addressing Racism coalition, in partnership with ACOG. 
• Cultivates relationships with community-based organizations and other entities working in the health equity space. 
• Ability to travel post-pandemic, approx. 5-7 times year.
