Works with members of the Health Policy Department/Council, NASS 501 (c)(3)/NASS 501 (c) (6) Boards of Directors, Health Policy Council, Advocacy Council, and others in the implementation of advocacy initiatives and events. Manages Advocacy staff and oversees relationship with Washington, DC based Alliance of Specialty Medicine and other advocacy-based coalitions. Coordinates communication between and among various NASS departments to accomplish advocacy goals. Serves as staff liaison to NASS6 Board and Advocacy Council, helping develop and implement legislative policies, program goals and projects. Works with the accounting department to ensure the filing of regular and timely SpinePAC reports with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and oversees processing of SpinePAC contributions and disbursements. Maintains financial records for NASS6 and SpinePAC and manages budgeting for each. Maintains respective NASS web site page content, tracking/posting state and federal health care legislation and provides updated copy for maintenance of advocacy pages. Develops and implements fundraising and marketing campaigns and plans member events and meeting exhibits for NASS Advocacy. Researches and writes all advocacy publications. Performs other duties as assigned.
Responsible for lobbying House & Senate members/staff on Committees of health jurisdictions and appropriations, specifically House Energy & Commerce, Ways & Means, GOP Doctors Caucus as well as Senate Finance and H.E.L.P. Committees.
Bachelor’s degree in Political Science or related fields required, advanced degree preferred.
Candidate should have 3-5 years of extensive experience working in legislative, regulatory or advocacy environment.
Superior communication skills necessary for developing and maintaining internal and external business relationships.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills, as well as the ability to adapt to a variable workload, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and function in a deadline-oriented environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge and experience with lobbying disclosure forms and FEC reports.
Must be a self-starter, with experience in working with little direct oversight of daily tasks.
Excellent planning skills for all advocacy activities and events.
Understand complex policy matters, concomitant political situations and ultimately determine final repercussions of proposed policies to help guide members to effective strategic approaches.
Adept at managing boards, committees and serve as a mentor and subject-matter on legislative issues.
Work with other departments internally on related matters.
Responsible for managing 2 full time Advocacy/Government Relations staff. Provides training and instruction to other employees or temporary employees on standard operating procedures of the department as needed.
