The Governance & Member Services Department supports AILA’s Board of Governors, Chapters, Member Groups (Interest Groups, Law Students, and New Member Division), leadership cultivation and recognition, committee selection, and other governance activities, and provides customer service for all current and prospective members.
Your Role
The Associate Director will assist the Senior Director in all member engagement functions of the Department to enhance the membership experience, including serving as a strategic consultant to AILA’s 39 local Chapters managing staff who are responsible for volunteer and elected leadership recruitment and development, member awards programs, and customer service.
Essential Job Functions include:
Chapter Management
In conjunction with AILA’s Volunteer Engagement Manager:
- Serve as a trusted advisor/resource to AILA’s 39 Chapter Chairs and other Chapter Officers.
- Identify and help resolve Chapters’ operational questions and liaise with appropriate departments to provide solutions.
- Ensure that Chapter Chairs receive information regarding AILA programs, services, and organizational matters.
- Regularly meet with department heads to stay informed of significant and sensitive organizational matters in order to remain a knowledgeable and reliable source for the Chapter Chairs.
- Design, develop, and implement strategies to build and maintain strong operational relationships between AILA and the Chapters.
- Identify areas of potential concern among the Chapter Chairs; communicate issues with key stakeholders within the organization as needed
- Offer counsel to Chapter Chairs and staff regarding governance practices as well as establishing preventative and mitigating measures to operational and programmatic concerns.
- Work with other departments to ensure needs of Chapters are represented in the work of the association.
- Work with Senior Director in developing leadership training, orientation materials, and resource manuals for Chapter Chairs.
- Provide guidance to Chapter Officers regarding fiscal and tax policies, affiliation agreements, incorporation, and insurance issues.
- Attend monthly Chapter Chair calls.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director.
Volunteer Engagement
- Act as an advisor to staff who are managing processes related to volunteer and elected leadership recruitment, development, and recognition (committee assignments, elections, and annual awards) across all Member Groups (Interest Groups, Law Students, and New Members Division).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director.
Member Services
- Provide guidance to AILA’s Member Services Team to ensure all related processes are properly integrated with Association’s governance structure and policies, and align with the goals, objectives, and strategies of the Association
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director.
This is a supervisory position. The Associate Director, Volunteer Engagement and Member Services will directly supervise the following job titles: Member Groups Manager, Member Services Manager, and Volunteer Engagement Manager. The position is accountable for total performance management of these positions including selection, termination, performance reviews, salary administration, and career development.
Your Background and Experience
5-7 years of association experience working with chapters or other, similar volunteer groups. Hands-on experience working with volunteer leadership. Prior supervisory experience required.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.

Travel
Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference or other association conferences. Participation in the AILA annual conference in June is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities.
