Working in close collaboration with the Director of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS), the Accessibility Program Manager will be responsible for the administration, implementation, and evaluation of the professional development trajectory for internal and external Library Professionals who support people with disabilities while accessing their spaces.
This individual will adapt, and curate existing frameworks outlined by federal, state and local laws and regulations. The Accessibility Program Manager will serve as a connection point to align best practices with ALA’s office of Human Resources, Information Technology (IT), Conference Services, and Public Programs Office (PPO) and other teams as needed.
Through intentional programming, the Accessibility Program Manager will partner with a multitude of member groups, stakeholders, and communities who live with and/or advocate for individuals and groups that experience barriers due to a disability and/or accessibility. They will initiate and support the planning of programs and initiatives, assessment of services, and serve as a collaborative partner within the American Library Association and across the field of Library and Information Services.
Further, they will work closely with the Deputy and Director of the office to advance disability inclusion by increasing learning, recruiting, retention and engagement in the area of accessibility to include all people with disabilities.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide recommendations to ALA on creating disability services, accessibility policies, and participate in the development of strategic goals to guide its internal business practices and operations
- Conduct accessibility audits and user testing of ALA’s built environments, processes, procedures, programing, training, and technology; bringing on the right partners to assist as needed
- Serve as ALA’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance partner with Human Resources, Conference Services, and Information Technology
- Plan the provision of workshops on accessibility to the field and as needed, to staff and member groups
- Identify opportunities for the office to build partnerships with disability run and lead organizations
- Serve as a resource for internal and external accessibility planning as well as responding to requests or grievances
- Other related duties and participation in special projects and team assignments as needed.
This is a grant funded regular full-time position based in our Chicago office. ALA staff are currently working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. We will resume in-person work at ALA offices when it is safe to do so. Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites.
ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date.

Starting Salary: Negotiable from the mid-60s, based on relevant experience. ALA offers a 35-hour work week, excellent benefit package including low-cost medical/dental insurance, retirement annuity and generous paid vacation. You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

Training, Experience, and Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited, 4-year institution
- Some background knowledge in Disability Justice and/or Universal Design
- Experience working within the provisions of local, state, and/or federal regulations including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Minimum of five years’ experience working directly with adults with disabilities and three years of direct project management experience required
- Ability to communicate with diverse groups
- Demonstrated project management, team building, and program evaluation skills
- Ability to interpret disability documentation, recommend, and implement reasonable accommodations
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information professionally and appropriately
- Advanced degree credentials in Disability Studies, Human Resources, or Digital Accessibility, Public Health or related fields preferred
- Experience in an association, education, social services, or healthcare setting a strong plus.
