Job Description:
The SVP leads the Office of Member Engagement (OME) effort to recruit and deepen engagement with ABA’s largest member banks. These strategically significant stakeholders are comprised of the largest banks in the U.S., defined as >$10B in assets. The SVP will be responsible for membership retention, recruitment, onboarding, outreach and engagement of these institutions, representing a meaningful portion of ABA’s annual revenue.
In addition to member recruitment, retention and onboarding, this SVP will oversee Large Bank communications, outreach, operations, billing, programming and events functions. This role will work cross-vertically, as well as with ABA’s Policy Division and with ABSA to support member issues and ABA’s strategic initiatives. Additionally, this role will lead a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Achieves 98%+ membership retention each cycle -- execute annual dues billing process for larger banks each cycle from approximately 100 member banks.
- Understand the space and in partnership with ABA’s CEO and Board members develop value proposition to recruit midsized banks.
- Leverage Thought Leadership Communications to bolster member outreach. Develop and amplify policy communications to midsize, regional, Globally Systemically Important Banks (GSIB) and non-traditional banks, along with Bank General Council’s. Carefully curate content and develop timely programming to align with cohort-specific priorities.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure membership-wide communications take into account the unique perspectives of larger members to ensure consistent, cohesive communications at large bank institutions.
- Serve as a primary point of contact on large bank policy coordination, leveraging its communications channel to build issue-specific working groups to ensure Policy positions that support the Large Bank industry needs.
- Educate members on the ABA’s value proposition -- promote opportunities for members to realize value from their ABA membership i.e., benefits awareness campaigns & webinars, in-person meetings, conference calls, zooms and other mediums/formats. Engages large banks in industry-wide grassroots and communications campaigns and enlists large bank support in flagship ABA programs.
- Build brand loyalty -- identify banker leadership, grow membership of the American Bankers Council, Scaling Peer Group, the Bank General Council’s Group and other key cohorts.
- Hosts monthly calls, quarterly discussions and annual in-person meetings to direct and inform ABA’s policy and advocacy work. Recruit new members, source priorities, schedules events, develop programming & communications and develop topics for discussion.
- Develop recruitment and retention marketing and communication pieces, including collateral, web content and engagement profiles.
- Ensure data integrity of large bank contacts, committee participations and member records in the CRM database.
- Communicate recruitment & retention data, emerging issues and priorities/challenges of large banks at the enterprise level.
- Manage the team’s budget function, forecasting incoming dues revenue and expenses.
- Collaborate with OME and Policy Team members to model the dues formula and set the dues schedule for each membership dues billing cycle.
- Provide recommendations and background detail on prospective Category C Board candidates and opportunities for engagement via Committee service, across ABA.
- Assist the Chief Member Engagement Officer, Membership EVP, OME Leadership and Executive Office with special projects, member research, development of appropriate engagement strategies, etc.
- Supports Membership EVP with strategic efforts and other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree preferred in Business, Marketing, Communications, Public Policy or related field.
- 15+ years of related experience working in a member or client experience capacity, membership association experience or consulting firm experience preferred. Additional experience in Sales, Marketing, Communications or Analytical experience preferred.
- 5+ years of management experience.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple, conflicting or shifting priorities while maintaining strong communication to internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail and excellent time management skills required.
- Demonstrable experience meeting deadlines and driving efficient, effective deliverables required.
- Self-starter with a demonstrated, high degree of initiative.
- Effective communicator across diverse constituencies with the ability to drive consensus.
- Able to work independently, as well as within a team successfully; ability to lead a team.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and experience working successfully with C-Suite level executives, both internally and externally.
- Ability to travel (<10%)
